Donuts
  1. 1 cup flour
  2. 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  3. 1/4 baking soda
  4. 1/2 teaspoon salt
  5. 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  6. 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  7. 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  8. 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  9. 5 tablespoons butter
  10. 1 egg
  11. 1/2 cup buttermilk
  12. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  13. 1/2 cup grated apple
Glaze
  1. 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  2. pinch of salt
  3. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  4. 2 tablespoons milk
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degree and spray a donut pan with pam. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, spices and brown sugar. In a small pan over medium-low heat, melt the butter until browned, 7 minutes. Watch closely and be sure not to burn. Let cool. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of the cooled browned butter. Add the wet ingredients to the dry, stirring to combine. Fold in the grated apple. Using a spoon, fill each donut pan with the batter. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  2. While the donuts cool, begin making the glaze. In a medium bowl, combine the powdered sugar with a pinch of salt, 2 tablespoons of the cooled browned butter, vanilla extract and milk. Add more milk if glaze is too thick and more powdered sugar if glaze is too thin. Once the donuts are cooled completely, dip each in the glaze and place on a baking sheet covered with foil. Place in refrigerator to harden, 15 minutes. I like to store mine in the fridge as the glaze tends to get soft when left out at room temperature.
